My Characters

My Characters...

Hi! Here you can read all about all my characters!

The Pelican

The Pelican (O Pelicano) is my first-born character and it came out of the blue around 1983. As I used to be the first student in my group to come to our classroom at Uni (thanks to the terrible bus schedule…) I had the whole blackboard for me… So, I started jotting down my weird, hopeless attempts at a masterpiece… until I met this guy, a pelican.
It’s clung to me, never leaving my mind alone. I kept drawing it till it became the Pelican. My classmates, all with a very refined taste for the arts of course (LOL), became fans of the early morning cartoon character on the board and would ask for more, more, more! However, as soon as I graduated the Pelican just vanished... No more blackboard, no more Pelican.
Alas, some years later, in 1989, I spent a great time in far England so as to brush up my English. And guess what??? The Pelican was re-born on British blackboards. Now I was drawing my Pelicans to an international audience, trendy. Great, but a year flies. The Pelican returned to Brazil and died again. For good, apparently.
GOOD NEWS! I took another year off (1998) this time to far more distant Australia to study International Business in Sydney. Of course, this stubborn Pelican of mine ‘resuscitated’… Another blackboard and the Pelican breathed anew never again to ‘re-die’!
Meanwhile, crazy things have happened in my life but the Pelican stood still an I –finally- realized I could try and draw it on plain paper! From this ‘violent fit of cleverness’ on I’ve been drawing my inseparable friend in the most hilarious situations… and what’s more, I have the guts to, every now and again, ‘expose’ my Pelican in many Cartoon Exhibitions! So far in two Brazilian States… hopefully one day the Pelican will be flying all over the WORLD!!!

Little Doll Cremilda

Cremilda, such cute little doll, was born in a classroom of a basic course on Cartoon&video making I attended in 2004. As a final task, my classmate Júlio Felício and I were supposed to make a stop-motion film (a very short one: 1 minute) starring the dolls we had learned to make in class.
Nuts as we were, we went on to take loads of photos following the non-written script indicated in our storyboard and… MIRACULOUSLY, we got this amazing final result: Scaring Cremilda, the movie!!!! Believe it or not it reached the big screen… We were so proud of it that we entered it in a local Video Festival in Florianópolis (Catavideo, 2004).
Not totally satisfied yet, I looked at all those 700 photos and just saw it… my dear little lady had to become the protagonist of her own book! That’s how Cremilda turned from a hand-made doll into a movie starlet and into a book character.
In her first appearance (O Susto da Cremilda / Scaring Cremilda, 2006) she shares the adventure with the friendly Lion-Bear Monkey, Júlio Felício’s doll. The photos used in the book come straight from the film.
On her second book (Cremilda Ecológica / Cremilda Goes Ecological, 2006) Little Doll Cremilda meets Mr Vulture, another doll I had lots of fun making. This time I had the joy of taking all the photos myself. Both books are bilingual (Portuguese/English). The English texts were revised by my dearest Aussie friends Louise Dyer and Mark Fitzgerald to whom I am forever grateful!
